Stuart Anderson MP Supports Energy Savers Week
Stuart Anderson MP is urging vulnerable residents to check their eligibility for help with heating costs, as cold weather has continues to hit parts of South Shropshire.
He has published an Energy Saver's Guide on his website. It aims to help residents get the support and information they need to keep their energy bills as low as possible.
Stuart's Energy Saver's webpage includes useful information, tips, and guidance on how residents can make their home more energy efficient and get the best deal from energy suppliers - including energy tariffs, home insulation, and other measures.
It is ahead of Energy Savers’ Week, an annual campaign. This year running between 20th and 26th January 2025, it aims to raise awareness of how residents can keep warm and spend less this winter.
The campaign is spearheaded by Citizen's Advice in partnership with the Energy Saving Trust. Citizen's Advice has reported that it helped almost 60,000 households struggling to resolve problems with their energy bills last year.
This is the equivalent of one person every two working minutes and double the figure for 2020. It follows the Energy Price Cap having increased by a further £21 in January.
When added to October's increase, the increase means that the Cap on typical annual bills has risen by £170 over the winter – an increase of over 10 per cent.
It is part of Stuart's mission to support local communities across South Shropshire, by addressing the unique challenges of rural areas and attracting investment for community groups.
Nearly nine million homes in England were built before 1945, but older homes can be made more energy efficient with a few simple steps outlined in Stuart's Energy Saver's Guide.
According to the Census, just 42% of households used main gas central heating in South Shropshire – compared with a national average of 73% across the country. Around 22% used oil central heating, compared with 5% nationally.
