Stuart Anderson, the prospective parliamentary candidate for South Shropshire, was delighted to visit Bishops Castle Livestock Market alongside the Country Land and Business Association. He was joined by Regional Coordinator Jan Hewes, CLA Communications Manager Natalie Oakes and CLA member Simon Bedell to attend the Tom Gittins Cup sale.
As parliamentary candidate, Stuart was keen to hear about the inner workings of the market and what challenges those involved were facing in business and their communities. His visits underscored the multifaceted significance of the livestock market in the community.
Livestock markets serve as vital focal points within rural communities – and Bishops Castle Livestock Market is no different. They facilitate farmer gatherings, enabling farmers to engage in commerce while reconnecting with their fellow agriculturists. Situated in the heart of Bishops Castle amongst local businesses, the market exemplifies this tradition and has been held annually since before the First World War.
Stuart, alongside Simon Bedell, was pleased to interact with buyers and sellers, some of whom had journeyed from as far as Yorkshire and North Wales to visit the cattle market. He was keen to visit Bryan G Jones LTD, a local machinery retailer boasting a 43-year legacy and now led by second-generation family member Gerald, to learn first-hand about the challenges of trading. Stuart was also pleased to discuss the pressing issue of Bovine TB with local independent vets, before returning to the market to see Simon successfully sell his cattle.
Stuart Anderson said:
Markets play a critical role in rural life, and Bishops Castle Livestock Market is a fantastic example of the importance of rural connectivity and the enduring importance of rural communities and their vibrant hubs. I had a fantastic time with members of the CLA visiting the market and local business, and I am grateful for their hospitality. As a South Shropshire candidate, discussions with local people are invaluable to me – I am committed to raising your issues and ensuring that local voices are heard.
